I first discovered this product, “Wild Planet, Sardines in Extra Virgin Olive Oil”
at the Whole Foods in Manhattan a few years ago. This brand and “blue galleon sardines” have been my favorite fish can brands. I’ve been a frequently consuming this product ever since.
Quality / Taste:
If you like fish/seafood, but not a fan of cooking raw fish at home which leaves fishy smell on the cooking materials and plates, these can products are very convenient. It’s lightly smoked and salted, so won’t leave strong smell on the plates. As Japanese, I am a big fan of high quality fish, particularly oily and silver looking ones such as sardines, mackerels, yellowtails, and such, the great thing about this brand is that the products are not processed too much so the sardines are still tender (unlike some Japanese can products, oily fish such as sardines can be firm even if from high quality brands).
Price:
In New York, I have seen the price of the can from $2.7 ish to $3ish to,, as high as $7. From what I’ve seen, I think the median is somewhere a little below $3. At the Whole Foods, the regular price is $2.99. At the Whole Foods, a case purchase applies a 10% discount, so a pack of 12 will be $2.69. When I purchase this at Amazon, I spent $26.61 for a dozen, $2.22 a can.
Value:
When feeling lazy, just boil 1/3 pack of linguine or angel hair pasta from the Whole Foods using their 365 brand, ($1.1 to $1.5 a pack, I think), cook less than instructed, 3 mins / a min, are enough for linguine & angel hair respectively, let it sit for a few seconds in the hot water, then stir the noodles with the sardine including the oil in the can. Add extra oil and high quality salt, if you like (olive oil w/ garlic adds a bit of kick, as well). Taking less than 25 mins including boiling water for great dinner costing less than $4 using high quality ingredients, I’d say that’s a great value.
