We visited Sam Cobb's date farm and it was such a wonderful experience. It was educational and now I have a true appreciation of all the work involved to produce delicious dates. A friend of mine thought that I would have gotten a kick out of visiting Sam Cobb Date Farm for a tour, so we visited on a nice clear day in Sky Valley, CA. I had only tasted a date once in my life, and I wasn't that thrilled with the flavor. But I went ahead with an open mind. While we waited for the owner to meet us for the tour, I noticed something very interesting while looking at some photos of the farm's history at the sales stand. Sam Cobb is a black man; and there began my amusement. You see, I always wished I had grown up on a farm and my friend knew that. But I was really going to meet a real, live black farmer. And Mr. Sam Cobb didn't disappoint. He was charming, funny and charismatic. Above all, he loves what he does. I learned so much about dates, I'll bet I remember everything he said. After he gave us a little education about the agriculture of the date and the history of his farm, we got to sample six different varieties of dates. I must say by that time my mouth was watering. And the variety that Sam Cobb himself developed, the Black Gold variety, was absolutely amazing! Mr. Cobb is one of a kind and his farm is a great American success story. I was truly blessed to encounter such a surprise. That was the coolest, most surprising, and truly enchanting finds to come along in a long while. I shall never give up on my dreams to become a farmer...on the weekends. (LOL)

I ordered Medjool dates. I have now found a ranch that I will order every time. I have 2-3 dates in my diet every day, and the extra one if I have a sweet craving to savor with a cup of coffee. I had major back surgery in my 70’s and am great now. My neurosurgeon gave me a list of foods to eat to help my bone grow and for general health. One of the foods on the list was dates. I could really eat a dozen in a day, or more. The flavor is sweet, the dates are fresh and soft, but not too soft, and freeze well. They are so fresh - and I live in Idaho! I’ve tried dates from three farms when I’m not wintering in California, Sam Cobbs dates are better than the ones I get at the farmers market in California. The dates are delicious! We got the Medjool and the Black Gold dates. Shipping was delayed due to high demand (I ordered a few days before Ramadan started). I appreciated the handwritten thank you note included in the package. It is so nice to be able to buy dates grown in the US. I will buy from Sam again!
