Just Roots is the BEST of Chicago. A small but mighty urban farm with the sweetest humans that donates half its produce to Chicago food pantries and community orgs. If you've ever wondered how much food can be grown on a city lot, their farm in Bronzeville will blow you away (AND their farm in Sauk Village!). Stop by the farm stand on a Saturday from Spring to Fall to snag some fresh veggies. Volunteer and get your hands dirty. Or - my fave - join their CSA to get weekly/bi-weekly boxes of fresh produce all season. Seriously, don't hesitate, just go!

My husband and I regularly volunteer at Just Roots farms and we keep coming back. The produce is sustainably grown, harvested the day before we pick it up and tastes so good. Volunteers come from all over the city and even the suburbs, so we're always meeting someone new. I appreciate the programs they host teaching community members how to cook healthy meals and create art using materials from the farm, among other events. Whether you're new to urban farming or have been growing your own veggies, Just Roots is a great place to learn more, meet terrific people and get your hands dirty.

Check out Just Roots to volunteer, to connect with the community, to support urban farming selling culturally relevant fruits and vegetables, and to enjoy FRESH fruits and vegetables especially STRAWBERRIES.

The farm is very organized and seems to host a huge base of volunteers. It reaches out to its local community (donating 50% of its produce) and also seems to bring in a lot of people that align with its mission and vision.

And if you can look for Tina or Turnip … the farm cat

The Saint James Farm of Just Roots is a hidden gem only a few miles south of downtown. Last year, I eagerly anticipated the biweekly email alerting me to what would be in CSA box. I love the freshness of just picked items, and the fact that you get some choices as to what goes in your fruit and vegetable box. The staff and volunteers are beyond helpful in making suggestions as what to make with some items. I felt really inspired by the bounty throughout the summer.

Either of Just Roots’ farms are a great place to be! I love what they do for the community, especially their Community Supported Agriculture Program! The produce in the CSA shares is always so fresh & high quality! Just Roots’ produce has become my preference over grocery store produce. I love that this org has allowed those of us in “food deserts” to have access to such high quality food.

I love Just Roots! Been a volunteer and a CSA member for several years now. It's great to get fresh, local, in season produce for the season and I'm always excited to expand my palate when it comes to veggies. For me, volunteering here has been my favorite way to get outside and meet other people - I've found a really great community here, the space tends to attract amazing people. The staff are friendly and welcoming. I recommend checking it out for the volunteering, farm stand, or CSA and supporting their cause.
