We lost our Chloe girl to a medical condition. We were totally devastated. It's still really difficult to be honest. After 11 days of having a huge hole in our hearts, we went to Herkimer humane society to adopt a new fur-ever friend. The staff here is extraordinary. They took the time to hear our story and even shed a tear with us. They knew just the right boy for us. We sat with Bow Tie (now Rocky) for quite a while. I personally fell in love at first site. Rocky's a high strung Husky Sheppard mix. He is about a year old and had a bad start. He is a quick learn. It took minutes to learn sit and stay. He house broke in 2 days.
We needed him and he needed us. God bless the staff at Herkimer.

I would love to give 0 stars but can't. My husband and I wanted to adopt a dog last week, and as soon as we entered the building, we were greeted by the rudest staff. They were very judgy and the older lady would not stop giving attitude. We were told they couldn't adopt to us just because we have kids. We have a dog and 2 birds at home already, we were just hoping to give another dog a forever home. They turn away adopters and treat people with disrespect. NEVER going there again, we will be adopting elsewhere. Very heartbreaking.🙁💔

Staff very helpful and kind. Animals at shelter are very well taken care of. Have a great variety of kitty cats, Adopt from this shelter. Prices are very affordable as well, 50$ adult kitties, 90$ kittens.

I came into the Humane Society to adopt a dog, I found the perfect dog Gizmo and while spending time with him before handing in my application one of the workers came in, an older female worker. Without saying anything she comes in and immediately starts asking us questions. I understand that they need to be thorough and make sure these dogs go to the right home I completely understand that. She was downright hostile and rude and I will never be returning to the shelter to an adopt a dog due to her behavior. While in with the dog after she came in and left we could hear her talking with other visitors who were here to look at the same dog, not a problem I had no problem leaving. I could tell then and there I wasn't getting approved for him from her tone. She was very rude about it, and I could hear her talking with them and her demeanor was totally different she was talking and laughing and making jokes, and she was just downright rude with me. With all the drama with them lately, not the behavior that they should be showing!! Rest of the staff I interacted with way lovely though!!!

i wish i could give 0 stars. imaging ripping pets away from owners & then giving them away to different people without any proper chip check etc, especially knowing the dogs/cats have came from loving homes ! yall only care about money and anyone adopting from them be aware. you might be adopting someones pet that they been fighting for & miss dearly & they would rather make a quick buck off an adoption then bring pets back to their rightful families.

These are the best people in the world, caring for the sweetest animals in the world. Thank you JoAnne and everyone involved for helping us bring Scout into our home and our family. He is the warmest, most wonderful little guy we could ever have been able to hope for after losing our last pupper to a cancer battle in June. We didn't think we could love another so quickly, and this is our first adoption, but Scout is the love of our lives. He sleeps with us every night, always has lots of hugs and kisses, is always a gentleman. He will always have all the love he needs with us. He is a treasure. Thank you all so very much!

Staff rude, dishonest. Herkimer County Humane Society I would disagree with saying harassment it was a question? When I drive by and see protesters outside holding signs and a YouTube heartbreaking story that brought me and countless others to tears and then start researching and reading about many stories of dishonesty to the public, unfair treatment and dogs that had loving families that came forward but pushed away. It makes me think of how many times I have dropped off donations and literary ran and doing it again this year for jeans for a cause, where in order to wear jeans everyone brings in cat or dog supplies so the week of Christmas we would bring in a trunk full of stuff. So instead of trying to jump at me, think why would myself who cherishes animals and was always proud of my local humane society has now lost all respect for you guys and my heart breaks because dogs and cats are my soft spot. My rescue that I got from Georgia was 1 day away from being killed by the shelter down there and luckily an organization in Utica helped me find her and I couldn’t imagine my life without her. Why someone like me would now have to wonder every time your charity post an animal on Facebook with a heartbreaking story, I have to wonder if there was a family looking and being turned away of getting their companion and if the story is nothing but lies. I couldn’t imagine going through what Tuckers owners is and still going through daily. Ask yourself that question because in my opinion the anger is a clear sign of truth and the public is seeing the truth and I hope things are made right and continue to be morally right, until then I will continue to wonder!

I adopted Toeby (the brown tabby originally named Nick) last year around September. I went in originally inquiring about a kitten but decided Toeby, a toothless, chatty, senior kitty needed my home more.

Toeby was incredibly kind and loving. He had some minor litter issues that were promptly resolved after changing the type of litter we used. He was in overall good health for his age and condition and is doing great. He is an old kitty and does need to see the vet a few times a year to get blood work but he is still perfect.

HCHS is amazing. The adoption process was smooth, I was able to visit with the cats and talk with staff. I only had to wait a few days after I filled out the application for them to contact my references, and I was able to easily bring Toeby to his forever home.

When you adopt an animal from a shelter you are accepting responsibility for that animal as soon as you bring it home. Sometimes animals will have unknown health conditions, sometimes they will have a behavioral issue that needs mending. You are accepting the possibility that you will need to conquer those issues and provide a safe and loving home to this animal. The staff here do everything they can, please be considerate and responsible when adopting. The work they provide is not easy, animals AND staff need support and respect to continue helping this community.
