I was travelling for business to San Antonio and stayed at Hotel Havana for two weeks and can honestly say when in San Antonio I will stay no where else. I love this hotel, it has the old character charm of a hacienda hotel, the staff were great, the restaurant food was delicious and the central location right on the river walk topped it off. I would recommend this hotel for anyone staying in San Antonio….

As someone who lives in the neighborhood, and is a regular patron of the coffee shop at the Carpenter Hotel, seeing what Bunkhouse has done to absolutely sterilize and kill the character there has been extremely disheartening. They've not only rebranded the coffee shop from "Hot L" (unique! fun! a witty play on hotel neon signs) to "Carpenter Coffee Bar" (boring, lifeless, a mouthful), but have also suddenly mandated employee work uniforms to try and suck the personality and individual spirit from the otherwise pleasant and cheery baristas who often seem understaffed and under-supported anyways. It's clear that the employees aren't exactly loving their new required "hey let's just slap a logo on it!" t-shirts and that morale has taken a hit since being forced to sweat through 100% cotton on hot days where they're just trying to crank through as many Ladybird lattes as possible before closing.

If Bunkhouse actually cares about keeping their employees happy and maintaining the one-of-a-kind creative elements that made these properties unique in the first place, they'll pump the brakes on the relentless and extensive branding efforts in the name of thoughtful introspection and consideration of what's actually necessary when taking over these spaces. Until then, I'll continue to lament with the baristas who just miss the freedom to wear their own damn t-shirts and don't wish to see their work environment further transform into cold, lifeless cookie-cutter establishment.
